ACA Open Enrollment

ACA open enrollment basics

Published by America's Health Center

Every year, there's a short window when you can sign up for or change an ACA marketplace health plan — miss it, and you're generally locked out until the next one rolls around. Here's what to know before it closes.

When Is Open Enrollment?

Open Enrollment for ACA plans generally runs from November 1 through January 15 in most states (a handful of state-run marketplaces set their own dates, so it's worth double-checking yours). If you enroll by December 15, your coverage kicks in on January 1 — enroll after that and your start date pushes back.

When Does Your Coverage Actually Start?

The exact start date depends on when in the month you enroll:

  • Sign up in the first 15 days of the month — coverage starts the first of the following month.
  • Sign up between the 16th and the end of the month — coverage starts the first of the second following month.

That gap between enrolling and your coverage actually starting is easy to overlook — if you have a procedure or prescription coming up, it's worth planning around it.

Missed the Window? You Might Still Qualify

Outside of Open Enrollment, you can generally only sign up for or change a plan if you have a Qualifying Life Event. The most common ones:

  • Losing health coverage (or expecting to lose it within 60 days).
  • Getting married or divorced.
  • Having a baby, or adopting or fostering a child.
  • A death in the household that affects your coverage.

If any of those apply to you, you typically have a limited window (often 60 days) to enroll — it's not automatic, so don't wait to check.

Why Shop Around Every Year

Even if you're happy with your current plan, prices, provider networks, and subsidy amounts change year to year. A plan that was the best deal last year might not be this year. A licensed broker can compare what's actually available in your zip code, side by side, at no cost to you.
