Choosing Life Insurance

Choosing life insurance coverage

Published by America's Health Center

Life insurance isn't a one-size-fits-all decision — the right policy depends on how long you need coverage, what you can afford, and what you're actually trying to protect. Here's how to think through the choice.

Start With the Question: How Long Do You Need Coverage?

If you need protection for a specific stretch of life — while raising kids, paying off a mortgage, or replacing income until retirement — Term life insurance is usually the most affordable option. It covers a set period (10, 15, 20, or 30 years) at a fixed rate, with the option to renew annually afterward, though renewal premiums increase over time.

If you want coverage that lasts your entire life, no matter when you pass away, you're looking at permanent coverage instead — which comes in a few different flavors.

Whole Life: Permanent and Predictable

Whole life insurance locks in a fixed premium and guarantees protection for your entire life, plus it builds guaranteed cash value you can borrow against later. That permanence and predictability come at a higher monthly cost than term coverage.

Guaranteed Universal Life: A Middle Ground

Guaranteed Universal Life offers permanent coverage at a lower cost than whole life, with a flexible end age (90, 95, 100, or beyond) that you choose upfront. Think of it as splitting the difference between term and whole life — it builds minimal cash value, but keeps premiums more manageable.

Variable Life: For the Risk-Tolerant

Variable life insurance ties its cash value and sometimes the death benefit to underlying investments, so its performance rises and falls with the market. It can outperform other permanent policies when markets are up, but premiums can become a strain when they're down. It's best suited to people already comfortable with investment risk.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Choosing

  • What am I actually protecting against — lost income for a set number of years, or a lifetime guarantee?
  • What can I comfortably afford in premiums, both today and if they increase later?
  • Do I want any cash value I can borrow against, or is pure death-benefit protection enough?
  • How comfortable am I with my premium or payout being tied to market performance?
